Our first stop will be made at the archaeological site of Vang Xang which dates from the Mon-Khmer period of the 8–11th century. En route, we will stop at Hmong village and arrive in Vang Vieng around lunch time. Our lunch will be served at a local restaurant.

On arrival, after checking in the hotel and having lunch, we will transfer around 10km north to the ethnic Khmu village of Viengsamay where after an introduction to the basics of kayaking we shall set off down the beautiful Nam Song River. The river offers various small but fun rapids along the way to Tham Lom (Winding Cave). After exploring the cave we continue Traveling downstream to Tham None (Sleeping cave). Which is one of the biggest caves in Vang Vieng and served as a rescue shelter for the villagers during the Second Indochina War. Today it is home to a family of bats and the ‘Magic Stone’ of Vang Vieng.

In the rainy season we will swim through the entrance to the cave. The final leg of the journey is a gentle paddle which will return us to Vang Vieng just in time to catch the sunset from the terrace at Ban Sabai Riverside Bungalows. Overnight in Vang Vieng.

Approximately: 15 minutes transfer, 2 hours kayaking & 50 minutes caving.

Day 3: Vang Vieng – Vientiane via Nam Ngum (B, L)

An impressive way to start our day is a walk around the bustling central market. The limestone cliffs and valleys surrounding the resort complex of Vang Vieng are home to numerous caves and caverns. The most famous in Vang Vieng is the cave of Tham Jang, which was used in the early 19th century in defense against the Chinese invaders. We also cross the river to Ban Huai Ngai, a very pleasant village where we can explore the different local lifestyles.

We bid farewell to Vang Vieng and drive to Vientiane. Along the way, we will make a short drive to visit Nam Ngum Lake a huge reservoir created by damming the Nam Ngum River.  On arrival at Nam Ngum Lake, we embark on a long tail boat visiting fishing villages in the various islets.
